Online Roulette Main Rules Explained

Online roulette - main rules and table explained

The rules of the roulette game are rather simple. The roulette wheel has 36 divisions of alternating red and black numbered patterns, plus one division that is green in colour and is marked with a 0.

  • Players can place bets on what will come up and the game commences
  • A ball is spun around the edge of the roulette disk and it eventually lands in one of the divisions, making it the winning number
  • If the player loses, their chips are collected by the croupier, if the player wins, they are  given their prize in chips

When it comes to online roulette, the game has similar rules but the computer replaces the croupier.

  • Choose a number, colour, or group of numbers to bet on
  • Decide and pick the wager amount and place the bet
  • Wait for the ball to spin
  • Collect your win if you have won
  • Place a new bet on the next spin

Roulette Types of Bets Explained

You can place a wide range of bets on one spin and these are easy to understand when looking at the betting mat.

One can bet on one number or a group of numbers. If the group you bet on has 6 numbers or less, it is called an inside bet; if it has more than 6 numbers, it is an outside bet.

Online roulette - inside bets

Inside Bets include:

Placing an inside bet – betting on less than 6 numbers – will give you worse odds of winning but the payout will be larger in return. The bet can be placed on a single square or a variety of intersections between squares.

  • Straight: betting on a single number by placing the chip in the box of the number
  • Split: betting on a pair of numbers by placing the bet on the line that divides the two
  • Street: one row of three numbers by placing the bet on the row
  • Six Line: betting on 6 numbers that are placed in two neighbouring rows
  • Corner: betting on 4 numbers by placing the bet on the middle of the 4 squares
  • Trio: this means a bet on either 0, 1 and 2 or 0, 2 and 3
  • Basket: this is a bet placed on the numbers 0, 1, 2, and 3

Online roulette - outside bets

Outside Bets include:

The outside bets are the most common bets and everybody recognizes these from movies. No matter if you are playing roulette online or in a casino, these basic bets are the same. As the game is of French origin, the terms of the outside bets are often displayed in French.

  • Red or Black: Rouge or Noir in French – placing the bet on either colours
  • Odd or Even: Impair or Pair – simply betting on the winning number to be odd or even
  • 1 to 18 or 19 to 36: Low bets or Manque are numbers 1-18, while high bets or Passe are 19-36
  • Dozens: Douzaine – bets on numbers 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36

Know your Odds to Win

The winning odds at roulette are quite straightforward. Were there 36 numbers on the roulette wheel, the house edge would be 0, and on a Red, Black, Odd, or Even bet you would have exactly a 50% chance of winning. However, the wheel has an extra number – the green 0 field – in European roulette, and, in fact, two of them in most American or Caribbean roulette tables. This extra field gives a house edge and in American roulette, the chances of winning are even lower.

The odds of winning are the lowest if you bet on one number. This way you have a chance of 1:36 in European roulette or 1:37 in American roulette. The highest odds are with bets that cover half of the 36 numbers, such as Black or Red, Odd, or Even, 1 to 18, and 19 to 36.

If playing a large number of roulette games consecutively, you should consider the house edge that is 2.7% in European roulette, and 5.26% in the American version, if you bet on a single number. This is the reason that roulette is much more popular in Europe than in the Americas.

Check out the table we have made for the percentage for each bet you can place on online roulette:

Best Roulette Strategies you Should Know

Since rigged wheels are not a possibility when you play roulette online, you can try to apply one of the below strategies. Roulette is a game of chance though and in the long run, you have to consider the house edge. Perhaps try these strategies with the roulette free version.

Martingale system

Martinglae betting system

This is the basic strategy that all roulette players know. With this strategy, you simply

  • double your wager after every loss, so the first time you win, you will recover all past losses plus a profit that is equal to the original bet.

The problem with this bet is that the past results do not affect the future, so players might have so many consecutive losses that they run out of money.

Labouchère system

Labouchère betting system

This is also called the cancellation system. Players determine how much they want to win and write down numbers that add up to that figure.

  • With each bet, the player wagers a sum equal to the first and last numbers on the list
  • If you win, the two numbers are crossed out from the list
  • If you lose, you put the lost amount at the end of the list

The process continues either until all the numbers were crossed out – and the desired amount was won – or until the player runs out of money.

D’Alembert System

D Alembert Betting system

This system is also called a pyramid system and this concentrates on minimizing the losses. The system simply dictates to

  • add one more unit of the wager after each loss and to deduct one unit of the wager after each win.

This system similarly evens out losses to the Martingale system, however, you don’t have to double the stake after every loss.

Fibonacci system

Fibonacci betting system

This system is used in many fields (for example, in trading) and is based on the Fibonacci sequence. Similarly to the Martingale system,

  •  you must increase the wager every time you lose according to the Fibonacci sequence.

However, regardless of the progression of the numbers, statistically, you are unlikely to beat the casino with this sequence.

FAQ

🎮 Can I win at roulette?

In the long run, the house will win but you can win individual games. Placing inside bets gives you better chances. The key is to stop playing after you have won a significant amount.

🎮 Which version of roulette should I play?

This depends on your preferences. Your best chance at winning is by playing European or French roulette. Live dealer roulette can be really fun though.

🎮 Is there a roulette winning strategy?

Many mathematicians have been trying to come up with a winning strategy but ultimately roulette is a game of chance. Some winning strategies would work if the player had an unlimited amount of funds.

🎮 What is the best bet on roulette?

Your best bet is on the roulette that offers an en prison option, essentially halving the house edge on even-money bets.

🎮 Is online roulette better than playing at land-based casinos?

This depends on whether you prefer the thrill of a real casino or the comfort of your home. A good middle ground is to play a live dealer online game.
